As of January 22 2024 the law regarding electric scooters in Spain has changed. If you are one of the estimated one million daily scooter users in Spain, please read this to make sure you are legal.
- All scooters should have a maximum speed of 25 km/h and be designed for one person. Be warned – just this week, police in Valencia were conducting road-side tests of scooters to ensure they meet the speed limit.
- Only scooters that have official certification by the DGT in Spain may be ridden. You can check if yours is on the list by going to the DGT website here. However if your scooter is not on the list you can still ride it until January 22 2027. After that date it becomes illegal!
- A helmet is no longer optional and must be worn at all times while riding the scooter.
- The scooter can be ridden on cycle lanes and other legal bicycle paths. It is not legal to ride on pavements and other pedestrian areas.
- Zero amount of alcohol in your blood while riding.
- No wearing of headphones or anything that could impair your perception of hazards around you.
- Only one person can ride the scooter at once – no backies!
- Reflective clothing should be worn at night.
- Some regions insurance is mandatory such as Alicante, whereas other areas like Murcia it is not.
The writing on the wall is clear that the government is cracking down on electric scooters to cut the number of accidents. I would expect more legislation to come in the future, such as a licensing scheme.
Stay safe everyone!
